The Container Deposit System Management Organization

◦ The number of disposable cups is counted when the collection/transportation business collects disposable cups from stores subject to a deposit. Still, the total weight of the cups is calculated when handing over the disposable cups to the recycling business. Therefore, we plan to calculate and inform you of the acceptable error range for the number of cups versus cup weight.

◦ When a collection/transportation business collects disposable cups subject to a deposit and hands them over to a recycling business, they receive 4 KRW for standard containers and 10 KRW for non-standard containers.
※ The center compensates all the standard container handling subsidies at stores in the areas that implemented the system early (Jeju Island, Sejong City).

◦ When a business subject to the deposit requests for the returned cups to be taken over through the ‘App for Sellers’, the quantity will be automatically checkable in the ‘App for Collection Businesses’. Therefore, although there is no need to count the cups on your own, checking whether the disposable cups have been sorted by the material is necessary.

◦ If you wish to collect items other than disposable cups subject to a deposit, they may be collected through a separate consultation with the contracted store subject to deposit. However, any items desired for collection require a waste permit.

◦ Please send a separate inquiry to your local government for waste-related permits.

◦ Although it is recommended that the business subject to the deposit directly contacts the collection/transportation business to discuss the contract, it is also possible for the collection/transportation business to directly contact the business subject to deposit and negotiate.

◦ For a list of businesses subject to deposit, please refer to the designation of businesses subject to deposit for disposable cups and notification of the unit price for handling subsidies stated on the Ministry of Environment’s website. Some businesses stated on the list are subject to change.

◦ You cannot receive any costs other than the processing subsidy from the business subject to the deposit. Details such as collection cycles, collection times, etc., can be carried out in consultation with the business subject to the deposit.

◦ In accordance with the Container Deposit System Management Organization’s regulations under the Enforcement Rule of the Act on the Promotion of Saving and Recycling of Resources, the center can take action if it is confirmed that the container deposit, handling fee, and processing subsidy have been excessively paid for or attempted to be received unlawfully.

◦ According to the collection and transportation businesses’ compliance with the Enforcement Rule of the Act on the Promotion of Saving and Recycling of Resources, they must notify the relevant businesses subject to the deposit and the Container Deposit System Management Organization one month prior to the scheduled collection end date.

◦ Since the collection/transportation business must register the recycling business as their contact in the system and submit information on their transfer details, it is also mandatory for the recycling business to sign up for the system.

◦ There are 22 return collection centers nationwide (as of October 20, 2022) accepting empty container returns. Once the system is implemented (December 2, 2022), all products subject to deposit (i.e., disposable cups, empty containers) can be returned at SejongㆍJeju return collection centers.

◦ In the case of SejongㆍJeju, additional collection centers will be installed and operated, and detailed information will be provided through the center’s website or the consumer app.

◦ Disposable cups taken over from designated collectors/carriers, etc., should be sorted into standard/non-standard types by material and recycled according to the recycling method and criteria in [Table 6] of the Enforcement Rule of the Act on The Promotion of Saving and Recycling of Resources. In addition, any relevant information must be provided to the Container Deposit System Management Organization.
